The quiet country lanes around Kirklees are ideal for exploring by bike. Steep strenuous climbs
are rewarded with panoramic views. Away from the high Pennine moors the going is more kind to those
looking for a gentler ride.
For a challenge, the 150-mile West Yorkshire Cycleway is mainly an on-road route which closely
follows the county boundary. In Kirklees the route passes through the gentle countryside of Denby Dale,
before becoming more arduous through the upper reaches of the Colne and Holme valleys in the west.
Alternatively, in the north of the district, you can enjoy a traffic-free ride on the Spen Valley
Green Way from Oakenshaw to Dewsbury.
Mountain bikers who want to get off-road can follow routes along bridleways and tracks, usually
linked together by short road sections. The terrain of the area ensures variety on your ride and,
if you choose, plenty of steep climbs and descents to test your strength and skill along the way.
